Frequently Asked Questions and Request for Proposal

How can I obtain the services of the VOIC for my patients?

The VOIC is able to screen patients for sight-threatening diabetic eye disease in two ways: either through fixed camera sites or via a mobile screening service. To ascertain the feasability of delivering our services to your patients, please complete the Request for Proposal section of this website.

How much does the service cost?

The per-patient cost of digital retinopathy detection depends on several factors, including the location of your office, the number of patients who would be screened, and the type of telecommunications service you use. Our proposal will reflect the optimum pricing for sustainable service.

How is the screening service paid for?

The VOIC contracts with participating physicians and/or clinics, and invoices for the contracted unit cost multiplied by the number of patients screened in the billing period. Individual MCOs and third-party payors may reimburse for CPT codes 92250 or 92499. As rules for reimbursement vary according to service area, it is always best to confirm reimbursement policies and rate of payment with your local MCO’s.

What is the turnaround time between imaging and receiving the report?

In most cases, reports are generated Monday through Friday within 24 hours of receipt of the digital screening images.

Are there special criteria for patients to be screened?

Although this process is capable of identifying lesions not typically associated with diabetes, the screening process is validated only for people who are known to have diabetes mellitus. In addition, our screening is intended for those who do not customarily obtain retinal screening from their own ophthalmologist.
